Landscape Painting - Outside the Box
August 1 - November 3, 2002
The Huntington House Museum, located on the Green in Windsor,
is the newest edition to Connecticut's roster of fine art and
cultural centers. The majestic structure that has been a landmark on
the Windsor Green for 100 years opened to the public in November
2001 after extensive renovations.
The beautifully restored 6,500 square-foot house is an example of the Neo-Classical revival
architecture, in the style of a Newport, Rhode Island mansion. It
includes breathtaking leaded glass, 12-foot ceilings, spectacular
staircases, a marble fireplace, and hand-carved wood-work, china
cabinets, and built-ins, combining to create the perfect setting in
which to enjoy the arts and social activities.
Originally built in 1901 by Henry Huntington, the house was
purchased in 2001 by Dan Ferraina, a local developer who recognized
its beauty and potential. After more than 15,000 hours of renovation
work, Ferraina leased the home for $1 to the Huntington House
Museum, Inc., a not-for-profit organization which was formed to
build an endowment, maintain the building, and make it financially
self-sufficient.
Today, the Huntington House Museum is a home for all art media,
as well as a showplace to feature traveling exhibitions. It is
purposefully eclectic, to be enjoyed by all visitors. Museum
exhibits will include work by local and nationally recognized
artists. In addition, individuals and organizations can rent out
rooms of the museum for private functions and events.
